COMMENT:

The original model on which this instrument is based is kept at the Royal College of music of London. The head figures Marsyas, the satyr that challenged the god Apollo to a contest of music and lost his life flayed alive. That’s why the original instrument has a huge pattern of crossed purfiling inlays both on the back and the soundboard, possibly referring to the cuts of the torture.

We loved making this instrument and experimenting new things with the varnish and textures. We kept it more simple on the ornament side compared to the original, keeping only the central ornament on the soundboard.
The soundboard is made of 5 bent pieces of French Spruce and the neck, back and sides are made of Bosnian Flamed Maple.
Fingerboard and Tailpiece are made of ebony with a double inlayed frame of purfilings.
The head is sculpted and the pegbox carved with a floreal pattern.
The varnish is oil, based on fossil amber, with antiqued and claquelure textures and details.
We made a shorter string length according to the customer request, with a length of 71,5 cm.
